Morgan State University invites applications for the position of Associate Dean for Research in the School of Social  Work. The expected start date is July 1, 2021.

 

Morgan State University’s School of Social Work seeks candidates who have a strong commitment to contribute to a thriving social work program at one of the nation’s largest Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). The school offers BSW, MSW, Online Masters of Social Work and the PhD degrees and currently enrolls approximately 600 students. Both the BSW and MSW Programs are fully accredited by CSWE. Morgan’s BSW Program is 50 years old but the graduate programs began in 2005/6. The  school’s broad mission is to prepare urban practitioners and leaders, policy experts, knowledge producers, scholars and social work educators who are committed to solving urban issues and problems and improving the quality of life for urban communities. Special focus is on urban children, youth and families, school social work, gerontology, public health social work, and addictions, within a social and economic justice framework

Founded in 1867, and located in a residential area in East Baltimore, Maryland, Morgan State University has been designated by the state as Maryland’s Pre-eminent Public Urban Research University with an R2 Carnegie classification moving rapidly toward an R1 classification, and is one of the nation’s oldest HBCU’s.  Morgan’s mission is to serve a multiethnic and multiracial student body and to help ensure  that the benefits of higher education are enjoyed by a broad segment of the population. The university offers a comprehensive range of academic programs including some 35 master’s degree and 20 doctoral programs (e.g. masters and  doctorates in education, public health, nursing, psychometrics, business, engineering, architecture and urban planning, and history, along with 10 online degree programs including the online MSW degree).


The Associate Dean for Research will oversee and provide leadership in significantly advancing the School’s funded research through federal, state, foundation, and local partnerships.  In this capacity, the Associate Dean will mentor  and support faculty and doctoral students in implementing and sustaining their overall research productivity and dissemination of urban focused research. In addition, the candidate, as a member of the school’s management team will play a pivotal role in carrying out the overall mission of the school through  implementation of the university’s and the school’s strategic goals and objectives related to academic initiatives and service to urban communities.


The candidate is expected to hold a PhD in Social Work or a related field and the MSW degree, to have achieved senior faculty rank, to have a well-established record of scholarship and substantial funded research, and a to have a strong dedication and interest in urban  social work practice, research and service. Prior administrative experience in social work education is required.
