Development Coordinator

Connecticut Farmland Trust (CFT) is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and personable Development Coordinator to join its team in Hartford, Connecticut.

Since 2002, CFT has worked with private landowners, local land trusts, and public agencies to protect Connecticut farmland, preserving more than 4,750 acres and helping its partners protect over 1,100 additional acres. A nationally accredited conservation organization, CFT is the only agricultural land trust in Connecticut and is a recognized leader in farmland preservation. CFT is a non-profit organization that supports a collaborative work environment and commitment to diversity.

Essential Functions. The Development Coordinator reports to the Executive Director and is an integral team member on a dedicated staff that is overseen by a volunteer board of directors. This position works closely with the Executive Director to identify, cultivate, and retain donors; plans and implements events for donors and the public; researches and drafts grant applications; and coordinates CFT’s website, social media, and e-newsletter.

Specific Duties

1. Fundraising Process and Coordination

  • Work closely with Executive Director to successfully implement CFT’s development plan.
  • Maintain relationships and support retention of donors through excellent relationship building skills and follow up.
  • Design and maintain an annual organizational calendar of donor stewardship activities and strategies that advance annual donors. This includes events, tours, stewardship, etc.
  • Make phone calls and write personal notes to thank donors.
  • Coordinate creation of appeals, reminder notices, and annual reports with consultant.
  • Arrange meetings with donors and foundations for the Executive Director.
  • Provide donor research as requested by the Executive Director.
  • Identify prospective donors and others that should be on CFT mailing and/or solicitation lists.

 2. Database Management and Analysis

  • Prepare fundraising donor analysis reports from donor database program (DonorPerfect) for Executive Director and Development Committee.
  • Oversee management of the donor database and the email database, including data updating and regular maintenance.

 3. Donor Cultivation

  • Work with Executive Director on analyzing and implementing programs and strategies for the long-term cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of development prospects.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director on updating and implementing the Development Plan and calendar.
  • Assist Executive Director in scheduling relationship building and cultivation opportunities with major donors through notes, calls, and visits.
  • Participate in budget development.
  • Work with Executive Director and board members to identify major donor prospects.
  • Work with Executive Director on the production of special letters, gift acknowledgments, and other communications with major gift prospects and donors.

 4. Events

  • Assume lead role in planning and implementing fundraising and donor cultivation events.
  • Coordinate other seasonal or special events such as farm tours
  • Create event communications such as save the dates, invitations, e-blasts, programs, and other marketing materials with professional as needed
  • Record and track event data and guest information, including budget, registration, etc.
  • Anticipate and implement post event follow-up activities with donors.

 5. Grants

  • Work with Executive Director to research, draft, and coordinate development of funding proposals.
  • Research new funding prospects to support CFT mission and vision.
  • Serve as liaison for all funding agencies or organizations.
    •     Maintain contact with funding organizations during review of submitted proposals and grant
  • Identify and prioritize potential funders for specific initiatives.
  • Track and meet grant submission and reporting deadlines.

6. Communications

  • Write and design quarterly e-newsletter in Constant Contact.
  • Coordinate press releases and biannual newsletters with consultant.
  • Prepare postings for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  • Maintain organization’s website (WordPress), in collaboration with consultant. 
  • Create and maintain a communications calendar of mailings, social media posts, etc.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher and 2+ years of experience in conservation and/or nonprofit development.
  • Demonstrated experience and comfort in fundraising, soliciting donations, and/or planning events.
  • A passion for farmland preservation in Connecticut.
  • Exceptional people, listening, and collaboration skills. Enjoy talking with new donors and have a warm and outgoing personality. This is extremely important given the position’s frequent communication with donors.  
  • Excellent demonstrated writing and verbal abilities and experience with professional communications (phone, email, letters, etc.).
  • Enthusiastic self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work independently and juggle multiple projects. Possess a high level of energy, confidence, and initiative.
  • Fastidious attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and ability to set priorities.
  • Ability to think and act strategically.
  • Experience with social media (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram).
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to research, collect, and interpret data.
  • Quintessential team player with a willingness to support colleagues outside of one’s primary responsibilities.
  • Ability to identify new opportunities and demonstrate desire to learn and try new strategies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of donor and sensitive information.
  • Technology savvy and proficiency with Zoom, Office 365, Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Office 365 programs).
  • Ability to provide own car, insurance, and valid driver’s license for travel in Connecticut.  Mileage reimbursed. 
  • Willingness to work weekend and evening hours as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and ability to use databases, specifically DonorPerfect.
  • Grant research and writing experience.
  • Public speaking.
  • Astute eye for written and visual communication (design or marketing experience, including ability to use Canva and other design software)
  • Experience with Constant Contact
  • Experience with media and press releases.

Compensation

  • Full-time position, with room for growth.
  • Annual compensation is $43,000 to $49,000, depending on experience. 12 paid holidays, 10 paid vacation days, and 10 paid personal/sick days per year. Flexible hours. Paid medical and long-term disability insurance. 5% employer-paid match to CFT retirement plan.
