 Position Summary

The Center on Global Energy Policy (CGEP) at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) seeks a Director for its Women in Energy (WIE) program. The WIE Program Director will be responsible for overseeing the management, administration, programs, and strategic planning of the WIE program, which is aimed at increasing the number of women working in the energy space and in senior leadership roles. The incumbent will lead the program’s continuing and new activities while building links and relationships with external groups to increase WIE’s impact and reach. The incumbent will oversee WIE student activities which include office hours, public events, private lunches and dinners, workshops, and site visits to energy organizations or infrastructure. Familiarity with the energy-related topics covered by the Center such as oil markets, natural gas, power sector, renewable energy, and climate change, among others, is essential. This role will interact with a wide array of Center stakeholders, including senior policymakers, industry executives and Columbia University faculty and administration. The position reports to CGEP’s Executive Director.



Requirements

Responsibilities:

Management and Strategy

Lead the planning and execution of WIE events and activities as well as direct day-to-day operations of the WIE program.  Represent CGEP and the WIE program externally at conferences, events, meetings, etc. Work with the WIE Steering Committee and lead regular meetings with attendees; Oversee and ensure that the Steering Committee is engaging meaningfully on program strategy, organizational development, and fundraising, including through regular meetings and developing additional opportunities for them to engage; Provide the Steering Committee with resources and tools essential to their guidance and oversight of the WIE program and to related fundraising. Follow current trends and events relevant to women and energy. Directly manage the work of Program Assistant(s) with tasks including: data-base management; partner outreach; preparation of meeting materials, event staffing, and other related tasks. Additional direct reports are expected in the near future as the program expands.

Program Expansion

Oversee the execution and management of the WIE mentorship program, including recruiting mentors, developing rosters of mentees, relevant program materials and guidelines, tracking outcomes, etc. Lead and oversee external and internal WIE relationships; In coordination with CGEP’s Development staff, lead outreach to and stewardship of institutional partners; Expand the WIE professional women’s network; Direct hourly workers on the development and maintenance of a database of professional women in the energy sector. Write funding proposals and identify new foundation opportunities.  Lead the outreach and marketing of WIE activities to students across Columbia University and external partner institutions; Oversee the WIE website ensuring relevant content is updated regularly.  Identify new funding sources and organize the creation of a WIE Corporate Board in coordination with CGEP and SIPA Development staff. Recruit energy companies to participate in the WIE Externship program and expand the number of student externship positions offered annually. Lead the domestic and global expansion of the WIE program by increasing the number of partner universities, working with the Columbia Global Centers, and launching a podcast. In coordination with other CGEP staff, establish a WIE Distinguished Visiting Fellow program.

Program Operations

The incumbent will have ARC access and will liaise with Sponsored Projects Finance (SPF), Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA) and the CGEP finance team with respect to budget creation, expenditures tracking on grants and gifts, and reporting to funders as appropriate. Take lead on organizing content and recruiting senior participants for expert group meetings, seminars, conferences, workshops, and similar gatherings, including identification and determination of major issues for discussion and selection of participants, development of background documents, and dissemination of results of such meetings. Lead strategic planning and discussions on program design, oversight, and evaluation to support implementation and capture best practices; Lead performance tracking to ensure program goals are met while addressing areas of concern.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or the equivalent combination of training and experience.  
  • Minimum of 4 years of directly relevant experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and minimum of 10 years of related experience.
  • The ideal candidate will be a collaborative manager of programs and staff, a strategic thinker and problem-solver, and an expert relationship-builder.
  • Demonstrated interested in advancing and empowering women.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of energy and women’s issues strongly preferred.
