Position: Staff Fellow (Biologist – Microscopy)

Series: This is an interdisciplinary, scientific position that will be filled in the General Natural Resources Management and Biological Sciences Series

Location: Jefferson, AR

Special Notes: This position will be filled as a Title 42 209 (g) appointment.  This is an Excepted Service position under Title 42.  This appointment does not confer any entitlement to a position in the competitive service and no entitlement to Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB) appeal rights.

Introduction:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR), is seeking a highly qualified Biological Science Laboratory Technician for the Nanotechnology CORE facility whose primary responsibility would be to provide electron and optical microscopy analysis to support nanomaterial characterization and biological studies. This core facility, located in Jefferson, Arkansas, is equipped with the state-of -the art equipment for nanomaterial characterization, including scanning and transmission electron microscopes, confocal microscopes and trained staff for nanomaterial characterization and biological assessment. The NanoCore has been designed to support research investigators with nanomaterial characterization, conduct research on nanomaterials to elucidate toxicity, biocompatibility, in vitro and in vivo.

Duties/Responsibilities

Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

The incumbent must have a broad and extensive knowledge of Microscopy and related methodologies. He/she must be knowledgeable and experienced in nanomaterial characterization utilizing electron microscopy and able to prepare biological sample for transmission and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, the incumbent should be knowledgeable with related techniques such as cryo-electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, electron diffraction, and tomography. Responsibilities will also include preparing biological specimens, such as cell and tissue samples, by embedding, staining, and sectioning for optical and electron microscopy.  The incumbent will support characterization by utilizing Confocal Raman microscopy, Hyperspectral imaging, and dark field optical imaging techniques.  He/she will be accountable for maintaining the electron microscopes, inventory of the lab chemicals, maintenance of research samples, and ordering of supplies.  The incumbent reviews literature to identify potentially usable procedures, demonstrates the ability to select appropriate procedure, and performs standard process under minimum supervision.  He/she will develop and write standard operating procedures for instruments, assist in analyzing the data and compose reports.  The incumbent will also be helping with training the staff and post-doctoral fellows on the use of electron or optical microscopy and expected to perform other duties as assigned. The ideal candidate would be self-sufficient and require minimal supervision and would be responsible for the daily operations of the laboratory.



Requirements

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate possesses a bachelor’s degree in biological or chemical sciences, experience in operating electron microscopes and prepare biological samples, performing routine laboratory assignments.  Experience analyzing nanomaterial using electron microscopy; and documenting procedures.
