Reports to:    President and General Director

Supervises:    Artistic Staff, Singers & Musicians

Classification:    Full-time, exempt

Salary Range:    $90,000-100,000

Date Available:  Late Summer/Early Fall 2021

SUMMARY: Minnesota Opera changes lives by bringing together artists, audiences, and community, advancing the art of opera for today and for future generations. The company is seeking candidates for the position of Vice President, Artistic. This position plays a critical role in the overall health and growth of Minnesota Opera, directly managing staff responsible for the vocal and instrumental divisions of the company. Reporting to the President and General Director and collaborating with the Vice-Presidents of Production and Impact, the position works to plan and execute annual performance seasons in accordance with the company’s standard of musical and dramatic quality as well as its diversity charter. The VP, Artistic will be an innovative, passionate lover of opera who helps facilitate long-range artistic strategy in line with the company’s mission and vision, and its anti-racist, anti-oppressive priorities, while continuing to broaden the brand and reputation of the organization across the State and throughout the opera industry. The successful candidate will bring an extensive knowledge of operatic repertoire, both from the inherited canon as well as current new works, and will have an innate curiosity about developing the works of the future in a collaborative way that centers artists and creatives.

Additionally, the Vice President, Artistic serves on the Arts Partnership Artistic committee, offering leadership and support for the artistic stewardship of the organization. The Arts Partnership is a collective organization made up of the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts and its resident partners, including the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Schubert Club, and MN Opera.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, but are not limited to:

•    Leading a dynamic artistic team, supervising all practical functions of the artistic department, guided by the company’s mission, vision, and values
•    Informed by the company’s EDI goals, provide casting, contracting, and production planning leadership in support of the company’s performances, artistic events, and external partnerships
•    Create, execute, and monitor budgets for annual seasons, capital expenditures, co- productions, and new works
•    Work collaboratively across departments to ensure the company’s artistic and fiscal ongoing success
 

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal
•    Frequent interaction with President and General Director; Vice President, Production; and Vice President, Impact
•    Regular interaction with Leadership Team colleagues across all departments
•    Frequent interaction and management of Artistic Team Staff Members
•    Regular interaction with singers, conductors, orchestra, and directors in season
•    Regular interaction mentoring members of the Resident Artist Program
•    Regular interaction with composers and librettists in association with new works
•    Intermittent interaction with Board Members and the company’s community at large

External
•    Regular interaction with artist managers
•    Regular interaction with current and developing artists in the field
•    Intermittent interaction with artistic administration of other opera companies and partner organizations, including Opera America



Requirements

THIS POSITION IS A GOOD FIT FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS:

•    Demonstrated interest in lifelong learning with cross-disciplinary interest in a wide variety of artistic endeavors, along with an endearing passion for opera
•    Artistic administrative experience and managerial experience within an arts organization; Experience in Artist Management or a University Setting is a suitable alternative
•    Advanced knowledge of operatic repertoire, classical vocal training, orchestra management, and an understanding of the current inventory of the field
•    Facility with inclusion, diversity, equity, and access principles
•    Outstanding communication skills with the ability to collaborate with a variety of colleagues from performers and colleagues to management
•    Excellent judgment and analytical abilities
•    Significant experience with contract negotiations
•    Ability to work and think independently, intuitively, and proactively
•    Draws energy from working with collaborative teams
•    Working knowledge with the Microsoft Office 365 Suite of products


MN OPERA IS WILLING TO TEACH:

•    Proprietary database management, policies and procedures
 

WORK CONDITIONS:

•    Ability to oversee evening or weekend performances, rehearsals, and functions.
•    Sitting for extended periods of time.
•    Ability to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and to handle other office equipment.
